Fried catfish is the iconic dish of Southern cooking. But for your information, there is more to catfish than a fried dish. In fact, people from all over the world cook catfish in various ways. With that in mind, here are some of the unique catfish recipes to try:

Spiced Catfish With Avocado

This recipe features an addicting spicy flavor blended with the avocado creamy taste. It is truly a unique way to cook your favorite catfish. For full list of ingredients, check out Food and Wine.

Place coriander or cumin seeds in a Dutch oven or skillet and toast over moderate heat until fragrant. Allow to cool then place in a spice grinder and grind it finely. In a bowl or a Dutch oven, mix the ground cumin and coriander together with oregano, thyme, chile powder, sugar, salt, cinnamon, mace and nutmeg. Set aside. Puree the garlic, onion and poppy seed in a food processor. Get a Dutch oven, pour three tablespoons of oil in it and place it over medium heat. Add in the pureed onion mixture and stir until the moisture has evaporated, about 5 minutes. Add one more tablespoon of oil along with the spice mixture and cook until fragrant. Arrange the catfish slices in the Dutch oven in a single layer and place it over medium heat. Pour water then cover. Stir occasionally for about 5 minutes. After cooking, transfer the fish to a bowl Continue boiling the sauce in the Dutch oven uncovered until about 5 minutes or until it thickens. Return the fish into the Dutch oven. In a bowl, add the onion and lime juice. Toss it well and season with salt. Add the avocados and toss more. Get a bowl and scoop rice into it. Arrange the catfish beautifully then place avocado salad on the side.

Fried Catfish Po’boys With Spicy Remoulade Sauce

For the Remoulade Sauce, get your blender ready and add scallions, jalapeno pepper, mayo, pickles, pickling liquid, mayonnaise, parsley and mustard. Pulse until the mixture is already almost smooth. Add pepper and salt to taste. Chill it while working on the catfish. Fill 2 inches of the Dutch oven with oil and heat it. Create a dredging station with the flour on one dish and the eggs on the other. Coat the fish slices with the egg and drain the excess oil then dredge it in the flour. Once the oil in the Dutch oven has reached 350 degrees Fahrenheit, place the dredged catfish into the Dutch oven and fry for about 5-7 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, remove excess oil from the fish. Get a plat and line it with kitchen towel then place the fried fish in it and allow the oil to drain. Toast your bread rolls with butter, slice it in half then spread remoulade sauce in it. Pile the fried fish together with  scallions, celery and tomato.

Suzy’s Healthy Catfish

This baked catfish recipe will allow you to enjoy a crispy catfish with an Indian twist sans the guilt and the oil. For full list of ingredients, check out Really Healthy Recipes.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Get your glass baking dish and drizzle it with olive oil. Scatter the cilantro leaves all over the baking dish. Get the catfish fillet and season each side with salt, sweet paprika and curry. Place the fillets on the pan on top of the cilantro. Set aside. Get a small bowl and put finely minced garlic and lemon juice in it. Mix well. Pour the resulting mixture over the top of the fillets. With the use of foil, cover the baking dish and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the aluminum foil and continue baking for 5 minutes more. Serve hot with mint cabbage salad as a side dish.
