The weather forecast is frightful, but you still want your Valentine’s Day weekend to be warm and cozy. The solution? Mulled wine.
Mulled wine is a red wine beverage that incorporates different spices and is served warm. Your insides get warmed up from the temperature of the drink and because of red wine’s warming effect—made doubly effective when combined with spices. Making mulled wine is beyond simple, so you can add it to your romantic candlelit dinner or prepare a batch and package it into mason jars to give to your friends as a V-day presents. Warm and tasty, here’s how to go about making it:
First you’ll need 4 cups of apple cider, 1 (750-ml) bottle red wine, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, 1/4 cup honey, 2 cinnamon sticks, 1 orange (zested and juiced) 4 whole cloves, 3 star anise and 4 oranges ( peeled) for the garnish. It’s not a long shopping list, but we promise that the results still wow your senses. This is a list of ingredients that you will come to swear by during the winter months when you’re entertaining and need something warm to serve your guests while the food is being served.
Once you have all of the above, combine the cider, wine, honey, cinnamon sticks, zest, juice, cloves and star anise in a large saucepan. Bring it to a boil and then simmer over low heat for ten minutes. Voila! You now have a batch of mulled wine! You can pour it into mugs and sip while under covers in bed, or pour into mason jars and add an orange peel to each as garnish. However you serve it, just make sure to inhale the aroma of the spices and recognize each note in the wine as you drink it. Most importantly, be thankful for whomever you get to share a glass of it with. Happy Valentine’s Day!
